What Anthropic does
Anthropic was founded in San Francisco in January 2021 by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, along with five other researchers who had worked together on GPT-2 and GPT-3 at OpenAI. The company positions AI safety research as central to its commercial work rather than separate from it, publishing its "Constitutional AI" alignment approach and a public Responsible Scaling Policy alongside its Claude model releases.
Claude, Anthropic's model family, is sold through a consumer app, a developer API, and Claude Code, a command-line and IDE-integrated coding agent that has become one of the most widely adopted AI coding tools since its 2025 release. Amazon and Google are both significant investors and cloud infrastructure partners.
