What it does

An open-source Arabic-English bilingual large language model built by Inception, a G42 subsidiary, with Cerebras and MBZUAI. The current generation, Jais 2, is a 70-billion-parameter model trained on the largest Arabic-first dataset assembled to date, with downloadable weights and a hosted chat interface at jaischat.ai.

The interesting part

Most large language models are trained primarily on English with Arabic as an afterthought. JAIS inverted that: built Arabic-first, from an Abu Dhabi research effort, and released open — unusual both regionally and for a model of this scale anywhere.

Who it is for

  • Developers building Arabic-language products who need a model not trained primarily in English
  • Researchers studying Arabic NLP who want an open, inspectable model rather than an API-only black box
  • Government and enterprise teams in the region with data-sovereignty requirements around Arabic content

Who should not use it

  • Teams whose product is entirely English-language, where a general-purpose Western model may already suffice
  • Anyone needing a fully managed commercial API with SLAs rather than a downloadable open-weight model

A typical use case

A regional fintech building an Arabic customer-support assistant fine-tunes on JAIS rather than a primarily English-trained model, to better handle dialectal Arabic and reduce translation-layer errors.

Limitations

  • Ecosystem tooling and community size around JAIS is smaller than for the largest Western open models
  • Running a 70B model requires meaningful compute — not a laptop-friendly download
  • The jaischat.ai interface is a demo surface, not positioned as a production API product

Pricing

The model weights are open source and free to download and self-host via Hugging Face; jaischat.ai offers a free hosted chat demo.

Privacy & data

Because the weights are open and self-hostable, an organization can run JAIS entirely within its own infrastructure rather than sending Arabic data to a third-party API.

Integrations

  • Hugging Face model hosting
  • Self-hostable for private deployment

Alternatives

Jais Climate

A bilingual model from the same team, specialised for climate intelligence rather than general use.

Why Nakoda noticed it

Nakoda leads its UAE picks with JAIS because it's the clearest example of the region producing genuinely open AI infrastructure rather than only consuming it — trained locally, released openly, and built to take Arabic seriously as a first-class language rather than a translation layer over English training data.
