What xAI does

xAI was founded by Elon Musk in March 2023, building the Grok model family and integrating it into X (formerly Twitter). The company raised over $22 billion in primary funding, including a $20 billion round in January 2026 at a $230 billion valuation, before SpaceX acquired xAI in February 2026 in a deal reported to value the combined entity at roughly $1.25 trillion.

As of mid-2026, xAI no longer exists as a standalone company: Grok and X are reported to operate as the AI division of SpaceX under the name SpaceXAI. This record is kept because Grok remains an actively developed, widely used model family, and the xAI-to-SpaceXAI transition is itself a significant, well-documented event in the industry's consolidation.
