Co-founded Anthropic in 2021 with several former OpenAI colleagues, including his sister and Anthropic president Daniela Amodei, to build steerable, interpretable AI systems. In September 2026 he argued publicly that the industry "must pace the frontier" and briefed the UN Security Council on AI risk.
How they got here
Before Anthropic, Amodei was Vice President of Research at OpenAI, where he worked on GPT-2 and GPT-3. He holds a PhD in biophysics from Princeton.
In September 2026 he said Anthropic would give independent evaluators permanent access to its models to assess whether the company is keeping its safety commitments, alongside calling for the AI industry to slow the pace at which it increases model capability.
