DIVISION 04 · AI VISIBILITY
AIO
AI Optimization - the umbrella discipline covering every surface where an AI system forms an impression of a brand, from the owned site to the third-party corpus models are trained and grounded on.
- Who it's for
- Organizations that want one coordinated programme rather than six separate workstreams.
- How it's measured
- Composite: citation share, representation accuracy and retrieval quality, read together.
- Typical timeline
- Runs continuously; the first consolidated baseline lands in about a month.
THE APPROACH
What it is
AIO is the term the market is settling on for the whole field - the coordination layer above AEO, GEO, LLMO, AI SEO, SEO and SMAO. Where each of those optimizes one mechanism, AIO governs the programme: which disciplines a given organization needs, in what order, and how their results are read together.
Why the umbrella matters
Run in isolation, the disciplines pull against each other. Content shaped purely for extraction reads badly to humans. Reputation work with no structural foundation has nothing to attach to. AIO exists to keep the disciplines in one plan with one set of priorities, so effort compounds rather than cancels.
How we approach it
We start from the organization's actual buyer questions and current AI representation, decide which mechanisms are the binding constraint, and sequence the disciplines against that - rather than running all of them at low intensity because they are all on the price list.
What we change
Whatever the diagnosis points to. In practice that usually means entity clarity and structured data first, answer-shaped content second, and the third-party citation corpus third - but the order is a finding, not a template.
How we measure it
One consolidated read across engines: citation share, representation accuracy, sentiment and retrieval quality on a fixed question panel, with each discipline's contribution attributable rather than pooled.
What you get
A single programme with one owner, one backlog and one monthly report - instead of six workstreams that each look busy and none of which explains the others.
QUESTIONS
AIO, in plain answers
What does AIO stand for?
AI Optimization. It is the umbrella term for the whole field of making an organization legible and citable to AI systems, covering AEO, GEO, LLMO, AI SEO, classic SEO and SMAO.
Is AIO just a new name for AI SEO?
They overlap heavily and the market uses both. We treat AI SEO as the search-engine-facing discipline and AIO as the coordination layer across all six - including the reputation and social signals that sit outside search entirely.
Do we need AIO or one specific discipline?
If one mechanism is clearly the constraint - you are invisible, or you are visible but described wrongly - start there. AIO is for organizations that need the whole programme sequenced rather than one problem solved.
THE OTHER DISCIPLINES
AIO rarely runs alone. The rest of AI Visibility:
AI SEO
AI Search Engine Optimization
Optimizing a brand's content and structure so it is surfaced, understood and cited by AI search engines - not just ranked by classic ones.
AEO
Answer Engine Optimization
Answer Engine Optimization - structuring content so answer engines can extract, trust and quote it directly in a generated response.
GEO
Generative Engine Optimization
Generative Engine Optimization - improving how generative models represent your brand across the answers they produce, at scale.
LLMO
Large Language Model Optimization
Large Language Model Optimization - the technical and content work that makes a brand's knowledge easy for LLMs to ingest, ground and retrieve.
SEO
Search Engine Optimization
Classic search engine optimization - still the foundation, because the pages that rank are often the sources AI engines cite.
SMAO
Social Media Answer Optimization
Social Media Answer Optimization - shaping the social and community signals that models increasingly draw on when they answer.
